I am not sure how to review it. It is a story of a guinea pig and penguin alliance that goes to war with mice. All the creatures have human characteristics and are probably a metaphor I have missed for races of people.
The story itself is a lot about war. It is bloody almost to the point of being stomach-turning at times. There is a torture scene that definitely stands out. Neither side are the ‘good’ guys. There are civilian casualties on both sides mentioned. It is bleak and nasty at times. I would definitely not recommend it to a younger audience or those of a sensitive nature.
That brings me to who I would recommend it to. I would recommend it to fans of war and fantasy novels. It is easy enough to read even if the content is not always. I think it is slightly too violent to be classed as ‘Young Adult’ but would appeal to some older teenagers.
I would describe it as a quirky and occasionally horrific read. The juxtaposition of what are seen as cute creatures and the actions they perform works on some levels. It is just not a book for everyone.
